Vinge – construction of an urban community

One of Denmark’s largest urban development projects, Vinge, is on route from the architect’s drawing boards to actual construction projects. In the years ahead, a 370-hectare nature resort just south of Frederikssund will create the framework for more than 20,000 inhabitants’ lives close to jobs and schools – a short 40 minute drive from Copenhagen. The project also includes a commercial development, which is expected to create more than 4,000 new jobs in the area.

Frederikssund is a medium-sized provincial town with some 16,000 inhabitants. Once the town of Vinge is fully developed, the population of the municipality will have more than doubled to approx. 40,000 inhabitants. The Frederikssund municipality’s “Office of Urban and Natural Development” has the overall responsibility for the project.

The first homes in the so-called Delta District has already been built and the first families have moved in. The next stage – Vinge Centrum – with a development of nearly 84,000 square metres and a new commuter train station is currently out to tender. During the month of March, the entrepreneur will decide on the actual tenders from investors and contractors. The world-renowned architectural firm, Henning Larsen Architects A/S, will act as a full-service consultant having designed the new station, which among other things will include a green landscape bridge above the rail tracks and connect the town’s green areas with an efficient public transport system.

The next tender stage will include the construction of a development of nearly 100,000 square metres that will contain both residential housing and commercial buildings.

Outstanding infrastructure

The new town will be helped along by a government decision to build a motorway link between Frederikssund and Copenhagen, where two out of three stages are built and opened to traffic. The final stage has been approved, but awaits funding.

It has also been decided to build a new bridge link across Roskilde Fjord to the Hornsherred peninsula. The bridge has an overall contract sum of approx. €267m.

Along with the existing commuter train connection to Copenhagen, the new town of Vinge will benefit from a modern and efficient transport infrastructure.
