Construction begins this year on Sweden’s largest public transport project

Stockholm is Europe’s fastest growing metropolitan region. New inhabitants mean new housing and new workplaces – as well as new public transport that reduce distances as Stockholm expands.

The Metro system will now be further developed with 20 kilometres of new track and 11 new stations.

The entire Metro system is built in rock underground. In addition, traffic capacity is being increased with the extensive expansion of an existing depot. This is needed to be able to receive more trains as traffic increases.

Construction begins is autumn 2018 and the construction period will be 6–8 years. Stockholmers will then be able to travel all the way from north to south Stockholm with a brand new line, or from east Stockholm to the central station in just 12 minutes without any changes – a journey that currently takes about half an hour, with at least one change.

The expansion is jointly funded by the state, county council and the four municipalities that will be getting a new Metro. Production costs are estimated at €1.386 m.

Stockholm County Council’s Extended Metro Administration is responsible for the expansion.

About 30 construction contracts will be procured in full international competition.
